Singapore-based offshore and marine engineering company Seatrium is poised to achieve what it describes as an industry first with the dual sailaway of two giant floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units, which are slated to depart its Singapore yard within weeks of each other and embark on a journey to Brazil, where they will work for the country’s state-owned energy giant Petrobras.
Seatrium has announced the impending sailaway of the FPSOs Petrobras 80 (P-80) and P-82, marking another significant milestone in its longstanding partnership with Brazil’s national oil company (NOC), Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras). The duo’s christening ceremony was held at the company’s Tuas Boulevard Yard. These two FPSOs are said to be among the largest ever built, with a scale capable of lifting Brazil’s national oil production by 10%.
Chris Ong, Chief Executive Officer of Seatrium, commented: “Over the last three decades, we have evolved alongside Petrobras’ needs to support its ambitions to be a global energy leader. The sail-away of P-80 and P-82 in close succession is a significant demonstration of that evolution, as we take the learnings to execute strongly for the three remaining P-Series FPSOs in our facilities.
“Orchestrating six large, multi-year projects concurrently is incredibly complex. We understand the criticality of these assets for Petrobras and Brazil – and we do not take this responsibility lightly. This milestone is a strong testament of our ability to create value, leveraging our global scale and capabilities, and galvanising the entire supply chain and ecosystem to deliver certainty for our customer.”
P-80 and P-82 are the 47th and 48th projects the Singapore-based firm has undertaken for Petrobras, building on a partnership spanning more than three decades. Following the sailaway of P-78 in 2025, these vessels are also the second and third turnkey FPSOs under the P-Series model commissioned by the Brazilian firm.
The two vessels will soon set sail for the Búzios field in Brazil’s pre-salt Santos Basin, one of the world’s largest deepwater oil fields and one of the country’s most important oil-producing assets. P-80 and P-82 are set to be the ninth and tenth FPSOs producing in the field, respectively.
Ong added: “We are now fully focused on offshore commissioning, striving to replicate the success we had for P-78 that achieved first oil and gas at record time. We appreciate the close partnership and trust we have built with Petrobras, and hope to continue creating new possibilities together.”
Each vessel is designed to produce 225,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and process 12 million cubic meters of gas per day, placing them among the largest FPSOs in the world. P-80 and P-82 are expected to add 450,000 bopd, or an approximately 34% increase to the installed production capacity, to the Búzios field when operational.
Magda Chambriard, President of Petrobras, underlined: “Along with the oil they will produce, these platforms will bring to Brazil the results of a strong partnership between Petrobras and Seatrium, between Brazil and Singapore – and they are further proof of just how fruitful this partnership has been.
“The P-80 will operate in Buzios, in the pre-salt layer of Santos Basin. It is a giant platform for our giant field. Buzios is Brazil’s largest field in terms of reserves and production and has already surpassed the milestone of 1.2 million bopd.”
With a water injection capacity of around 250,000 bpd, each vessel has an oil storage capacity of approximately 2.5 million barrels, further enhancing the units’ role as high-capacity production assets in Brazil’s prolific field.
As part of Petrobras’ new generation of high-capacity production facilities, P-80 and P-82 incorporate technologies designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce emissions, including carbon capture and reinjection capabilities, energy recovery systems, and other technologies that support more sustainable offshore production.
Chambriard continued: “The P-82 will follow, also heading to Buzios. With production scheduled to begin next year, the two units together will enable production from the Buzios field to increase by 450,000 bopd.
“They will generate energy for many years, bringing development and a better future for the Brazilian people while bearing witness to Singapore’s technical expertise in the global shipbuilding industry.”
