Why State Farm is distributing $5B in cash among its auto insurance customers

    Claim:

In summer 2026, insurer State Farm started distributing $5 billion in cash to its automobile insurance customers.

    Rating:

In the summer of 2026, a rumor spread that U.S. insurer State Farm, which covers homes, businesses, pets and vehicles, was handing out $5 billion in cash to its automobile insurance customers because the company had strong financial results in 2025.

The rumor appeared on TikTok, Reddit and Facebook. One post on X said some State Farm auto insurance customers could receive up to $100 per vehicle (archived):

Several news outlets reported the story, including CBS News, Fox Business and the New York Post tabloid. In addition, several Snopes readers reached out seeking to verify whether the offer was real or a scam.

As we outline below, the offer was legitimate. State Farm confirmed the plan on its website on July 31, 2026, and created a portal for auto insurance customers to claim their checks.

“Yes, eligible State Farm Mutual auto customers are being notified about their dividend payment as part of the company’s one-time $5 billion cash-back dividend, the largest in State Farm Mutual’s more than 100-year history,” a spokesperson for the insurer told Snopes in an email. “Over 7.2 million checks have already been mailed with another 3.8 million going out this week, and dividend payment selection emails (offering customer options for payment) continue to roll out in waves.”

The spokesperson went on to say the company announced the plan in February 2026, following strong results for 2025 (we found the announcement on its website):

This dividend is possible due to State Farm Mutual’s financial strength and a stronger than expected underwriting performance, which has been reported industry wide. As a mutual company, State Farm is uniquely positioned to provide value directly to customers rather than shareholders. The payments average $100 per vehicle and will vary by state and premiums paid.

On July 31, State Farm said it was starting to issue “dividend payments” to some of its customers. A dividend is a portion of a company’s earnings, typically distributed to its shareholders.

“Each customer’s payment is based on a percentage of the premium paid for each qualifying policy in 2025. Percentages vary by state, ranging from 4% to 10%,” the July 31 announcement said.

The payout concerned nearly 50 million insured vehicles. “Because the distribution covers more than 49 million auto vehicles, the payment process will take several months to be completed nationwide,” State Farm said on its website.

According to the spokesperson, customers should wait for a “dividend payment selection email from donotreply@e.sfdividend.com” that will include unique identification and PIN to connect to the insurer’s dividend payment portal. The customers will then have the opportunity to select their preferred mode of payment.

For further reading, Snopes has confirmed that several suspected scams were legitimate, including an ATM surcharge settlement.
