Ukraine needs 5% of US Patriot stocks to get through winter, Zelensky says

Ukraine needs five percent of the United States’ Patriot interceptor missiles to get through the winter and 10 percent to destroy all of Russia’s ballistic projectiles, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview published on Thursday.

Speaking to CNN, Zelensky said Ukraine this year “had two-and-a-half times less interceptors than we had in 2025”.

“Russia has two times more ballistic missiles per month than they had before,” he said in English.

“This year, I’m asking American partners to sell me five percent of missiles (that) they have in their stocks,” he added. “If they sell us five percent, we will go through the winter and save people’s lives. If they can sell us 10 percent, we will destroy all the Russians’ ballistic missiles.”

Ukraine has reported an acute shortage of Patriot interceptors since the US and Israel went to war with Iran in February, diverting supplies of the advanced systems.

Ballistic missiles are much harder to intercept than cruise missiles or drones because they move faster and follow steep trajectories.

Ukraine military aid surged in June despite long-term shortages

Boosted by new EU financing, military aid for Ukraine in June hit its highest level since the US pulled funding, though long-term support is lagging, Kiel Institute data showed Thursday.

Kyiv was allocated 7.2 billion euros ($8.3 billion) in military aid in June, the highest amount since the 9.04 billion euros received in April 2024. US funding dried up in February 2025.

It is the third-biggest monthly military funding boost from donors since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, according to the think tank’s Ukraine Support Tracker.

The surge was largely driven by the European Union’s new Ukraine Support Loan, which helped European institutions allocate 4.3 billion euros of military aid in May and June.

The 90-billion-euro EU loan was introduced to support Ukraine’s budgetary and defence needs in 2026 and 2027.

“The rapid launch of the Ukraine Support Loan sends a positive signal to Ukraine,” said Taro Nishikawa, project lead of Kiel’s Ukraine Support Tracker.

On top of the loan support, Germany allocated 700 million euros, Denmark 600 million euros, and the Netherlands 500 million euros to support Ukraine’s military.

Ukraine’s Izmail port infrastructure on fire after Russian attack

Russia struck the area around Ukraine’s largest Danube port of Izmail overnight, causing damage and setting ‌off a fire, regional authorities said Thursday.

Izmail, near the Romanian border in the southern region of Odesa, handles grain and other ‌commodities, and the attack comes a day after Ukraine hit ‌Novorossiysk, a major grain export hub in Russia’s part of the Black Sea.

Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, scrambled two fighter jets, its defence ministry said on X, adding that an aerial target spent about 10 minutes in national airspace before leaving for Ukraine.
