- The claim that U.S. President Donald Trump wore a wig, hairpiece or toupee during an appearance in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Aug. 5, 2026, is unproven.
- The rumor stems from photos and videos of Trump speaking in Las Vegas, where his hair reportedly appeared fuller and redder than in photos from other events or media engagements.
- Snopes compared various photos of Trump’s hair from the reputable photo agency Getty Images to attempt to investigate the claim. However, due to differences in environments and lighting, it was not possible to definitively conclude whether Trump wore a wig on Aug. 5.

Because only Trump or White House staffers could confirm whether the president wore a wig, we leave this claim unrated pending a response to a query on the topic to the White House.
In August 2026, a claim (archived) circulated online that U.S. President Donald Trump wore a wig, hairpiece or toupee during an appearance in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Aug. 5, 2026.
For example, the independent journalist Aaron Rupar posted a video of Trump’s speech at the Red Rock Resort on Aug. 5, writing, “is Trump rocking a wig, or what the h*** is going on here?”

Similar claims that questioned whether Trump wore a wig also circulated on Facebook (archived), Instagram (archived), Threads (archived) and Bluesky (archived). Snopes readers contacted us about the claim.
Though Trump’s hair appeared both redder and fuller in some photos taken during his Aug. 5, 2026, speech than in previous images of the president, the reason was unclear. It was possible that lighting and camera quality affected how Trump’s hair’s shape and color appeared in individual shots, which made direct comparisons and conclusions difficult.
We contacted the White House Press Office to ask whether Trump wore a wig, hairpiece or toupee during his speech in Las Vegas on Aug. 5, 2026, and await a reply.
Because Trump or White House staffers are the only people who could confirm whether the president altered or supplemented his natural hair, we leave this claim unrated pending a response from the White House.
Photo, video comparisons inconclusive
We compared photos of Trump from the Las Vegas event and photos taken in the days and weeks before specifically looking for similarities and differences in the president’s hair. The photos used in the comparison came from the reputable photo agency Getty Images.
The hypothesis this exercise tested was whether Trump wore a wig to the Aug. 5, 2026, event that he had not worn previously, resulting in notably different hair.
Rather than leading to any direct conclusions about whether Trump wore a wig on Aug 5, this comparison exercise actually suggested that using photos in this way was a somewhat unreliable method. Photos of Trump on different days tended to be taken in different environments with different lighting, making direct comparisons difficult.
We attempted to only directly compare photos taken by the same photographer. Even then, it was not possible to know whether that photographer used different cameras or lenses for their photos, and how that or differing lighting affected what Trump’s hair looked like.
Photos available through Getty Images that Agence France-Presse photographer Jim Watson took on Aug. 5 and 6 showed the president’s hair appeared fuller at the front while he spoke in Nevada than it did the next day at the White House. It is worth noting here that Watson took the Nevada photo under stage lights, while he took the White House photo inside during the daytime.
The Getty Images photographer Chip Somodevilla took front-on photos of Trump on Aug. 5, the week before on July 29 and on July 4. Somodevilla took both the Aug. 5 and July 4 photos under stage lighting. Trump’s hair appeared redder, but not necessarily fuller on Aug. 5 than July 4 or and July 29.
Videos of Trump speaking from the White House, C-SPAN (time code 15:41) and The Associated Press cast doubt on whether the red tinge seen in some photos was just a trick of the light. Trump’s hair appeared different shades at the same time in the three streams above and in Rupar’s X post, meaning it was impossible to conclude what color it actually was and demonstrating the difference in visuals that different cameras can create.
As for volume and density, Trump’s hair at stage-lit events a month apart looked relatively similar in these regards, suggesting that if the president did wear a wig or hairpiece on Aug. 5 it was not the first time he had worn it to an event.
In January 2026, photos from an event at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., showed Trump with pinkish hair. At the time, a hairdresser reportedly told the Daily Mail that this color shift could be due to a hairstylist adding violet toner to “achieve a silver or lighter blonde look” in Trump’s hair. The hairdresser said that violet toner could cause blonde hair to appear pinkish or reddish if the stylist used too much product or left it in for too long, but that the pink tinge could also be a result of stage lighting.
It was unclear what caused the apparent color change in some photos in August 2026.
Trump’s signature blond hair frequently sparks rumors, including about the president allegedly wearing a wig or toupee. For further reading, Snopes has previously investigated several of these rumors.
