Was cafeteria worker Denise Whitmarsh fired from school over packing extra meals for hungry kids?

    Claim:

School officials in Bridgehaven, Pennsylvania, fired Denise Whitmarsh, a 61-year-old school cook, after they found out she packed extra meals on Fridays for hungry kids to eat over the weekend.

    Rating:

A rumor claiming school officials in Bridgehaven, Pennsylvania, fired Denise Whitmarsh, a 61-year-old school cook, after they found out she packed extra meals on Fridays for hungry kids to eat over the weekend spread online in early August 2026.

For example, a Facebook user wrote (archived):

A school cafeteria worker is at the center of a debate after reportedly losing her job over acts of kindness. According to reports, Denise Whitmarsh, 61, was fired after school officials said she violated district policies by setting aside untouched food and bringing snacks she purchased with her own money for students she believed might otherwise go hungry over the weekend. Supporters say she put children’s well-being first and should have been praised, not punished. Others argue that schools must follow food safety, inventory, and distribution rules consistently, regardless of good intentions.

The story spread further on Instagram (archived), Threads (archived) and X (archived), with some commenters seemingly believing it was true. Some posts claimed the alleged firing happened in Bridgehaven, Pennsylvania. Snopes readers contacted us to verify the claim.

To investigate the rumor’s legitimacy, we first used search engines such as DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo (archived, archived, archived) to search for reports about a Pennsylvania school firing Whitmarsh. Our searches did not find any credible reporting about Whitmarsh’s alleged firing.

We identified the rumor’s original source: The Dude Humor Report. The Instagram account’s bio describes its content as “satire & parody stories that are exaggerated, developing fictional created for entertainment purposes only.”

The Dude Humor Report first shared (archived) the rumor on July 26, 2026, using the hashtags “#funny #comedy #satire” and “#FORENTERTAINMENTONLY.”

The post included a a watermark reading “The Dude Humor Report” in the upper right corner. However, multiple social media users later reshared the claim without the label noting its satirical source.

Snopes routinely fact-checks satirical items that originate on The Dude Humor Report’s pages. In response to another claim we fact-checked in March 2026, a spokesperson for TBC VIRAL MEDIA, an Oregon-based company that manages The Dude Humor Report, described the page’s content as “Made up. Not real. A joke.”

The spokesperson said that though the page took care to mark its content as satirical, it had no control over how other internet users shared it.

“Once someone screenshots and reshares content, it leaves our hands entirely. We can’t follow it around the internet with a big flashing JOKE sign, tempting as that sounds,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also said the page uses artificial intelligence to help create its images. OpenAI’s Verify tool suggested that someone made the image supposedly showing “Denise Whitmarsh” using the company’s tools.

The Dude Humor Report has produced other fictitious stories in the past. For example, Snopes fact-checked posts claiming police arrested a woman who posed as a Costco employee and handed out tequila samples, and a man who posed as a museum tour guide.

Since the effectiveness of satire is subjective, we use “originated as satire” or “labeled satire” ratings based on creators’ description of their work. It’s your call on whether you agree.
