    Watchdog training for student journalists

Watchdog training is coming to students in the Midwest and Puerto Rico this fall.

As higher learning institutions work to hinder, pressure or punish student newspapers over reporting controversial stories, IRE, in partnership with Open Campus, is proud to bring watchdog training to two universities in September.

Student publications often do a better job covering their school than local news outlets — sometimes they’re the only ones on the story! — but they also face additional challenges because they’re students. These day-long workshops will help students learn how to cover their institutions with more depth and provide them with the skills and tools to protect their rights as journalists to keep their communities informed.

On September 25, students can attend the workshop, Campus Coverage: Watchdog Reporting for Student Journalists, at IRE’s headquarters at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

🖤Check out the tentative schedule now!💛

Fellowships for students in Missouri and the surrounding states are available. Fellowships include workshop registration and a year-long IRE membership or renewal.

Students outside of the state can register for the workshop for just $25. A current IRE membership is required to register (an additional $25 for new student members).

Information about the Campus Coverage workshop coming to Puerto Rico will be posted soon. Sign up for IRE’s biweekly newsletter, Quick Hits, to receive the latest on all training opportunities and other important deadlines and news.
